These institutes are free of charge for Boston Public School and Metro-Boston Art Educators. These rigorous institutes can also be taken for Graduate credit (3 credits) for $435.

Animating the Curriculum Frameworks | Course Journal

July 5-9, 2004

This intensive studio course addresses the vitality of the unexplored aspects of the Massachusetts Visual Arts Standards. Specifically, concentration will focus on Standards 6-10. Using playful studio and conceptual approaches, participants will construct a portfolio that represents the weeklong workshop experience and then present this work in a gallery setting (physical or virtual). Additionally, visiting guest artists enrich the studio immersion experience.

This workshop is appropriate for both novice and veteran teachers.

Pre-requisites: A high tolerance for ambiguity; willingness to get lost; reverence for failure; ability to be a good sport; and a joyful spirit

Exploring Digital Art
Using New Media in the Art Classroom | Course Wiki Pages

July 12-16, 2004

This concentrated weeklong workshop will provide teachers with background in the history, aesthetics and role of New Media (Internet, computers, software, hardware, digital photography and film) in the k-12 classroom. Emphasis is on exploring digital craft and expression with New Media in a studio environment. Participants will also discover ways to evaluate art content and peer resources on the Internet and define and explore elements of New Media literacy.

The workshop features presentations by guest artists, demonstrations of hardware and software, an overview of the AEContent Network, discussion, open studio exploration and presentation opportunities. Each participant will create one new media studio or research project during the week, participate in a virtual exhibition, and prepare a short paper that references one of the Standards
6-10, for inclusion in the AEContent network. 

Pre-requisites: This course is appropriate for computer novices and experts. A general understanding of either the Windows or Mac user interface is desirable but the wilingness to explore and be challenged by new technology and new forms of expression is most important.
